CLARKSVILLE, Ind. — A man is dead after reportedly charging at officers with a machete
at a southern Indiana Walmart.
According to police, Daniel Scott of Corydon, was walking around the Clarksville Walmart on
Veterans Parkway after closing hours around 11:15 p.m. Monday.
Employees reportedly noticed Scott, who appeared to have a neck injury, wandering around the store since 8 p.m.
When the employees asked him to leave, he refused which led them to call police.Clarksville Police officers
who were already in the area on an unrelated call arrived shortly after.Sgt.
Carey Huls, a spokesman for Indiana State Police, when officers contacted Scott, he allegedly charged at them
with a machete taken from inside the store.An officer fired shots at Scott, hitting him and he was transported
to the hospital where he later died.
His stepsister Jasmine Walls said she was shocked when she heard the news.“The story wasn’t the Daniel we all know. I just don't know what happened. He’s never been like this, so I don’t want people to remember him by the story,” she said.
Walls called Scott a kind and caring brother, describing how he took her for rides in his car when he was a teenager. "He was so sweet and he put everyone before himself always," she said. Walls told WHAS11 Scott had been in and out of trouble in his life, especially after his father passed two years ago.According to records out of Harrison County, Scott had charges dating back to 2011.
Most recently, he faced multiple fraud charges in 2021. He had pleaded guilty to one count in that case and was placed on probation earlier this month.Clarksville Police said they aren't releasing any additional information about the shooting at this time. Indiana State Police was asked to investigate -- typical protocol in incidents involving police.Their investigation is ongoing.
