This footage shows an elderly female patient having her mouth inspected - to reveal hundreds of live maggots crawling around her gums, which are in poor condition. The patient appears to be anesthetized and breaths heavily during the procedure while a tube pumps anaesthetic gas through her nose. Oral or gingival myiasis is rare disease caused by invasion of tissue by larvae of certain houseflies. It is mostly reported in developing countries and the predisposing factors include poor oral hygiene, halitosis, trauma and mental status changes. The incidence of oral myiasis is comparatively lesser than that of cutaneous myiasis as oral tissues are not permanently exposed to the external environment. The flies are attracted to bad mouth odor due to neglected oral hygiene of fermenting food debris and can lead to rapid tissue destruction and disfiguration and requires immediate treatment which includes the use of chemical agents and manual removal of the maggots from the oral cavity.
