A 13-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder after an alleged stabbing at a Tasmanian retail store left a worker fighting for life.
Police were called to the Moonah department store, about five kilometres north of Hobart, at midday on Friday to investigate reports of a disturbance.
Two teen boys allegedly entered the Harris Scarfe store and were involved in an altercation with an employee, in what police allege was a shoplifting attempt gone wrong.
The argument is understood to have escalated outside where the stabbing took place.

The worker was rushed to Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition, while a second person was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Following a search involving a police helicopter, two teens who fled the scene were located less than two hours later in the nearby suburb of Lutana.
The pair are expected to appear in court on Saturday.
Police said the 13-year-old boy was also charged with aggravated armed robbery and assault.
A 15-year-old boy was also charged with aggravated armed robbery and assault.
Officers said the worker remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.
A Tasmania police spokesperson said authorities are aware that a video of the incident is circulating on social media and has urged people to stop sharing it online.
“Media and members of the public are urged not to publish the video which identifies minors who are the subject of legal proceedings,” the spokesperson said.
