Man hit, killed by train in Oceanside, appears a suicide

Oceanside —  

A man who dashed onto the tracks in front of an Amtrak train in Oceanside was struck and killed instantly Wednesday, authorities said.

It appeared that the man waited until the northbound train approached the Oceanside Transit Center, then ran into its path, sheriff’s Sgt. Jason King said. He said alarm bells were sounding and lights flashing as the train neared the station, near Michigan Avenue and Cleveland Street, about 9:35 a.m.

The engineer hit the brakes, but wasn’t able to stop the train in time to avoid hitting the man, who became lodged under it, King said.

“It’s definitely a suicide,” King said.

King said the track being used by the Amtrak train was closed during an investigation, but two other tracks remained open. The North County Transit District sent notices by Twitter that Coaster and Sprinter trains were delayed for about an hour.

The Sheriff’s Department investigates incidents involving trains in the county.
