ONSLOW COUNTY - The Marine accused of the brutal attack on a cab driver earlier this month was arrested and formally charged with felony assault on Tuesday.
Gunnery Sergeant Adam Kinosh, 30, had his first appearance in Onslow County District Court on Wednesday.
Investigators believe Kinosh is the man caught on taxi dash-cam video from the early morning hours of September 10. The video, released by Island Taxi Cab Company owner Rex Bowen, showed a verbal argument between the driver and the man in the passenger seat. That argument, the video showed, turned physically violent.
The driver of that cab, Charles Hawkesworth, 26, suffered multiple facial fractures.
On Wednesday, Chief Assistant District Attorney Michael Maultsby filed a motion to increase Kinosh's bond from $20,000 to $100,000. Maultsby said Kinosh is not only a flight risk, but also a danger to the community. In court papers, Maultsby stated the nature of this case is especially brutal.
"The defendant viciously assaulted a cab driver for no reason," stated Maultsby. "This entire incident was captured on video." It's video that Maultsby said speaks louder than words.
The Honorable Judge Paul Hardison increased the bond from $20,000 to $50,000, not the $100,000 requested, and placed a condition that Kinosh not leave Onslow County without permission of the court.
After posting bail, Kinosh literally ran from reporters outside the Onslow County Magistrate's Office. He did not make a statement.
According to military officials in court, Kinosh will be spending the next 30 days completing a mental health and substance abuse program aboard Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune.
Camp Lejeune officials said that Kinosh has served in the Marine Corps for more than 14 years and that he does not have a history of violence.
