An incident occurred in Onitsha, Anambra State, where two individuals, suspected to be brothers, were burnt alive for alleged thuggery.
The deceased, identified as Omaume and Monday, were known among the local traders and residents as members of an armed robbery gang. This gang was led by a man named Ikanda, who is currently serving time in prison.
The brothers were accused of using touting as a cover to rob residents and traders of their valuables. A video of the incident circulated online, showing bystanders screaming as the men were set ablaze. Some onlookers expressed that the punishment was too severe for mere touting, highlighting the fact that these men were someone's children.
The Anambra Police Command condemned this act of jungle justice, labeling the suspects as armed robbers. The Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, criticized the public's decision to take law enforcement into their own hands and urged them to bring criminal offenders to the police station for proper investigation and legal action.
Preliminary information revealed that the deceased were part of a notorious armed robbery gang responsible for numerous attacks and thefts at the Main Market in Onitsha. The gang leader, Ikanda, is already in custody at the Correctional Service Custodial Centre.
In response to the growing issue of touting in the state, Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo recently launched the Anambra Special Anti-Touting Squad. During the launch, he warned that the days of touts in the state were numbered and declared a full-blown war against them. He emphasized the need for law and order in a society where lawlessness had become a culture.
Governor Soludo also advised the anti-touting squad to collaborate with the Nigerian Armed Forces, who have the primary responsibility of ensuring the state's safety. He urged citizens to report any touting activities they noticed and warned market chairpersons that any market where touts were still operating would be disbanded, and the chairmen removed from office.
The governor's ultimate goal is to restore Anambra State, known for law and order, back to its full glory as the 'Light of the Nation'. He emphasized the importance of a society governed by law and order, not one where individuals act arbitrarily without recourse to law and order.
