A 23-year-old woman and her nine-month-old daughter were electrocuted while they were walking near the Hope Farm junction in Whitefield, considered to be part of the IT corridor, in Bengaluru on Sunday.
The deceased have been identified as Soundharya and her daughter Suviksha, residents of AKG Colony under Kadugodi police limits.
The incident took place around 6 am when Soundharya and her daughter were going to her mother’s house. While walking on the footpath, Soundharya stepped onto a wire which had fallen on the road and was electrocuted along with her daughter on the spot.
Passersby informed the Kadugodi police, who have registered a case and are investigating the deaths.
A police officer said fibre-optic cables have fallen on the footpath in several areas of the city and have not been removed. Soundharya might have assumed the electric wire to be a fibre-optic cable and stepped on it.
Soundharya’s husband is from Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu and works in a private firm in the industrial town of Neyveli near Cuddalore.
Citizens have demanded action against Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) for ignoring live wires which have been lying on roads in the city.
Whitefield Rising, a citizens’ group, posted on X, “She came in contact with a live BESCOM wire just hanging from the top. Hope Farm is one of the busiest junctions in Whitefield, with thousands of people walking, waiting to catch the bus, walking to the metro station. @wfieldps @dcpwhitefield – when will an FIR be filed against negligence in Bangalore?”
Shivakumar Gunare, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Whitefield division, said three BESCOM workers have been detained and are being questioned in connection with the deaths.
