Adailton Oliveira da Silva, 23, a market porter, was shot dead at around 1.30pm on Monday (4), in Rua Papa João XIII, Praça do bairro Tomba in Feira de Santana.
According to locals, a man wearing a helmet approached the victim, who was from the city of Capim Grosso, and fired shots.
Rogério Leandro de Jesus Santos, a journalist, told Acorda Cidade that he had even joked with the victim before the crime.
"I was one of the last people to speak to him. He was on his break at a feed store around the corner, and when I went down to have lunch, I even joked with him, telling him 'wake up, because inns are more expensive'. I had gone down for lunch and then the information came that he had been executed, a person who worked as a market porter, he made himself available to work in this way," he said.
Deputy Fabrício Linard presided over the investigation. He told Acorda Cidade that a video showed a man following the victim and firing two shots.
"Adailton Oliveira de Jesus was passing in front of this greengrocer's stall, he was surprised by a man from behind, who shot him both in the neck and in the buttocks, and it is very likely that this shot in the neck was fatal, hitting some artery, because when he fell, he was already lifeless," he said.
Asked if the victim could have been murdered by mistake, the police chief explained that the chances are minimal.
"A death like this by mistake is unlikely, because the person followed the victim down this main street in the Tomba neighborhood, and made sure that he was the victim. According to what we've gathered here, he was a person who worked every day, got up at 5am, people also don't know anything about his involvement, but everything indicates that it was an execution. The perpetrator was wearing a helmet, which makes the investigation difficult, but with faith in God we will get to the perpetrator of this crime," he said.
Deputy Fabrício Linard also drew attention to the fact that the crime took place close to a Military Police police module.
"Practically in front of the police module, this demonstrates the audacity and daring that these individuals are having. At 1.30pm, with business booming, it's really unfortunate, but now we in the Civil Police and Military Police are going to do our job to provide maximum security for the citizens of Rio de Janeiro," he said.
According to the police chief, it was not possible to identify which weapon was used in the crime, but according to the images, it was probably a revolver.
