Two men aged 23 (from Lubusz Voivodeship) and 47 (from Lower Silesian Voivodeship) were climbing the northern slope of Śnieżka mountain.

They unfortunately slipped and slided around 1 kilometer down the "gutter of death" to Kocioł Łomniczki. While sliding down, they lost all of their equipment.

Both of the men died on spot.

According to the witnesses, there was also a third person that slided down the "gutter" but the rescue team didn't find anybody else. It was also later confirmed that there was no third person.

The tragic accident occurred on Tuesday on the northern slope of Śnieżka. GOPR rescuers received a report about tourists who slipped down the so-called the gutter of death. — They flew almost a kilometer down an icy slope and during that flight they basically lost all the equipment they had with them. They lost their equipment and their backpacks fell off. Everything fell apart all over the slope, Adam Tkocz, head of the Karkonosze GOPR Group, revealed in an interview with Gazeta.pl.

Two tourists died by sliding down the 'death chute'

The accident occurred around 2 p.m. on the northern slope of Śnieżka. Rescuers received a report about three tourists who, while walking along the slope of Śnieżka, slid into the so-called Łomniczka Valley. the gutter of death. On the same day, the bodies of two men, Polish citizens, aged 23 and 47, were found.

Adam Tkocz, head of the Karkonosze Group of GOPR, on Tuesday around 19 informed PAP that the search for the third person had been ended. — The rescuers found no one; The accounts of people reporting the accident were very divergent - they said there were two, three, or even four people, he admitted.

In an interview with Gazeta.pl, Adam Tkocz revealed that the men slid down the icy slope for over 900 m. He added that retrieving the bodies was possible thanks to the use of rope techniques - they were first transported to Dom Śląski, and then to Karpacz.

It turns out that accidents happen there every year, especially when the mountain slope is icy. — Accidents in this area are serious, but usually the injured can be saved. Fatal accidents on Śnieżka occur every few years - emphasized the head of the Karkonosze GOPR Group.

Rescuers are unable to determine how the accident occurred because they have not received any reports from eyewitnesses so far. It is also unknown whether the men who died were well prepared for the hike.
