Outsourced public school employee who fell down stairs while working dies in DF

Information was confirmed by the victim's family and the Civil Police, on Saturday afternoon (24). Sandra de Souza Marinho cleaned the school's awning and did not use safety equipment.

The outsourced employee at the Class 10 School in Ceilândia, in the Federal District, who fell from the top of a staircase died this Saturday morning (24) . The information was confirmed by the victim's family and the Civil Police.

Sandra de Souza Marinho was 41 years old and fell from a height of 4 meters, on February 16, while cleaning the school awning with a jet of water. The woman was not wearing safety equipment.

Vanessa Ferreira, Sandra's niece, told TV Globo that her aunt died because her heart stopped. According to her, doctors did not complete the brain death protocol that began on Thursday (22). She died around 9:30 am.

"It's revolting. Unfortunately, we are suffering very, very much. We just want to understand what happened. We want answers that we don't have yet", said Vanessa.

Images from the public school's security camera show the moment of the fall (see video above) . The woman hit her head and suffered convulsions.

She was taken to Base Hospital in serious condition. According to her family, Sandra has worked as a general service assistant for 7 years and has no vision in one of her eyes .

The company Real Jg Facilities released a note of condolence and said Sandra's tragic death touched the entire company board, as well as co-workers. "However, we hope that she is at peace now, especially given the great suffering caused by what happened", says the note (see the full text at the end of the report).

Sandra was standing on top of the school entrance awning, without any protective equipment (see photo above) . The family questions the lack of PPE and the reason for the employee to do work outside of her role.

The civil engineer specializing in Occupational Safety, Loraymer Araújo, upon seeing the images, states that there were several safety problems:

• Ladder not suitable for cleaning higher places


• No planning for carrying out the activity


• No personal protective equipment


• No training

"From 2.5 meters high, the person necessarily has to work anchored. So there should be a lifeline. Anchored from one point to another, it has a steel cable or a rope, and the employee, as soon as he is going to perform this activity, he will be using this lifeline", says the specialist.

The cleaning was being done by Sandra de Souza Marinho, who climbed up to the height of the awning, and by another employee, who was holding the ladder. However, before the stairs slid, Sandra's colleague left the place.
