El Paso police release body cam footage of officer-involved shooting on Doniphan
The El Paso Police Department has released body camera footage from an officer-involved shooting in El Paso's Upper Valley earlier this month.
The incident occurred just after 1 a.m. on March, 5th when an officer approached a vehicle parked at a carwash on the 5800 block of Donaphin Drive.
In the video posted on social media on March 23rd, body cam video shows the officer making contact with a male, who police have identified as 30-year-old Michael Anthony Estrada.
In the video, Estrada can be heard identifying himself, while telling the officer he is frustrated and having car trouble.
The officer asks Estrada several times to exit the vehicle, telling him to calm down. The officer then asks what Estrada has in his hand, to which Estrada tells the officer he has a gun and can be heard asking the officer, "Do you want to go home tonight?"
The video then shows the officer firing his weapon several times.
In the moments after the shooting, the officer can be seen calling on his radio for backup — Estrada was later declared dead at the scene.
The encounter lasted less than five minutes.
The police department's crimes against person unit, internal affairs, and the Texas Rangers are still investigating.
The Internal Affairs Shooting Review Team is also reviewing the case for the administrative investigation, according to police.
"Conclusions about whether the officer's actions are consistent with the law, and the department's policies will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete," Sergent Robert Gomez, a public information officer for the El Paso Police Department says.
The full body cam video can be seen here, but police say the video may not be suitable for all audiences.
