Tucson, Arizona — On Saturday, February 24, 2024, shortly after 10:00 p.m. the Pima County Sheriff's Department responded to a hotel located at 4855 South Palo Verde Road for a report of a suspicious person. The 911 caller, an employee of the hotel, reported that an adult male was yelling outside of his hotel room and waving a sword. Deputies arrived at the scene and found the male, 23-year-old Devon Lewis standing outside a hotel room, holding a sword. As they approached in their vehicles, Lewis sheathed the sword but continued to hold it when deputies approached on foot. Deputies established communication with Lewis, who made incoherent statements as deputies began to ask him questions. During this time, Lewis suddenly removed the sword from the sheath and took an aggressive stance. Deputies quickly stepped back and gave commands for him to drop the sword. Lewis did not comply and began charging at deputies with the sword raised, prompting one deputy to discharge his department issued handgun, striking Lewis. Deputies immediately began rendering aid by utilizing their individual first aid kits until personnel from the Rural Metro Fire Department arrived to continue lifesaving efforts. Despite these efforts, Lewis was pronounced deceased at the scene. No deputies or other community members were injured in this incident. The deputy who discharges firearm has been identified as Ramon Morales, with one year of experience with the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
