A man trying to prevent a carjacking was hit and killed by the carjacking suspect, according to the Lumberton Police Department.

Police said they were called to an attempted carjacking on Thursday on West 5th Street in Lumberton.

They said while officers were on the way to that location they learned the suspect in the attempted carjacking had been involved in a hit-and-run at a gas station on the same street and was trying to carjack another vehicle.

Police said good Samaritans got involved to prevent the carjacking but the suspect was then able to steal the vehicle of one of the good Samaritans.

They said in the process of stealing the vehicle the suspect reportedly intentionally struck one of the good Samaritans with the stolen vehicle.

The good Samaritan who was hit was taken to the hospital and died.

He was identified as 38-year-old Jonathan Adam Lecompte, of Fayetteville, North Carolina.

An officer said they chased the suspect until he crashed the stolen vehicle.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Ricky Alex Driggers, of Lumberton, was taken into custody.

Driggers has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted common law robbery, larceny of a motor vehicle and felony fleeing to elude.
