Mothers were attacked by crocodiles while bathing in the Kapuas River, the victim's legs were severed

Sanggau - Housewife (IRT) named Natalia (32) in Sanggau, West Kalimantan (Kalbar) was attacked by a crocodile while bathing in the Kapuas River. The victim managed to survive but his right leg was severed by a crocodile.

"The victim was bathing, a few moments later suddenly the crocodile pounced on the victim's right leg, the victim tried to pull his leg free. The victim's right leg was severed up to the knee," said Head of Public Relations of the Sanggau Police, Keken Sukendar, to detikcom, Thursday (25/4 /2024).

The incident occurred in Lanting on the edge of the Kapuas River, Kelapuk Hamlet, Kampung Baru Village, Toba District on Wednesday (24/4) at around 06.15 WIB. The victim who was attacked by the crocodile then shouted for help from residents.

"Hearing the victim's screams, residents then came to help, that's when there was a tug-of-war on the victim's legs between the crocodile and the residents until finally it came loose and its leg broke off," he explained.

The victim was immediately taken to the Tayan Hilir Community Health Center using a speedboat to receive treatment. The victim was then referred to hospital.

"The victim must be referred to the hospital by medical staff for further action," he said.

Keken said that the river flow was indeed the habitat of crocodiles. It is possible that the attacks by wild animals were caused by damage to the ecosystem resulting in attacks on humans.

"It is possible that this crocodile lacked food supply so it attacked humans," he said.

Keken added that his party was coordinating with BKSDA for further handling of the crocodile. His party is also conducting outreach to the public to be more careful when carrying out activities on the river.

"Because the incident occurred repeatedly, it has been coordinated with BKSDA. We are also sensitizing people who live on river coasts to be more alert to similar threats," he concluded.
