According to police reports, the suspect, Kieng Kunthea, a 34-year-old Cambodian man, was arrested in Tuol Khpos Commune, Tuek Phos District, Kampong Chhnang Province. The arrest came after a week-long investigation led by the Criminal Police Department in collaboration with local authorities from Preah Sihanouk, Kampong Speu, and Kampong Chhnang provinces.
During interrogation, Kunthea reportedly confessed to the crime, stating that he had doused the victim with gasoline and set him on fire. The suspect cited anger over perceived disrespect and financial disputes as motives for his actions. Zhang succumbed to his injuries at Preah Kosamak Hospital shortly after the attack.
The investigation was initiated under the direction of General Sar Thet, National Police Chief, and Lieutenant General Ngeng Chou, Director of the Criminal Police Department. Senior officials, including Lieutenant Colonel Hun Munniroth and Colonel Hem Bona, led the investigative efforts.
The suspect has been transferred to the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Police for further legal proceedings. This case highlights the ongoing challenges in maintaining public safety and addressing violent crimes in Cambodia's coastal region.
