The Fresno Police Department says they have arrested a man they suspect of seriously injuring a Fresno city employee in an unprovoked attack on Friday morning.
30-year-old Dyllan Padavona was arrested by officers from the Southwest policing district and was being interviewed by detectives on Friday night.
Padavona was arrested near Santa Clara Street and Van Ness Avenue, less than a mile from where the attack happened around 7:30 a.m. in the area of Kern and G streets.
Fresno police say a city employee was working on an electrical box when the suspect walked up and struck him in the back of the head with a blunt object.
Surveillance video captured the employee falling to the ground and not getting back up.
Police say the suspect then casually walked off.
"This was a vicious and unprovoked attack in broad daylight. There was nothing the city worker could've done to prevent this," said Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer.
The victim is an electrician with the city's public works department.
His name has not been released, but we know he's 57 years old and has worked for the city for 20 years.
He was working alone at the time of the attack.
The employee was rushed into surgery and remains in critical condition.
As of Friday afternoon, officials said that he had not regained consciousness following the attack
His family was with him at the hospital, including his wife and two daughters.
