Ipswich Mental Health Patient Suffers Serious Burns At Petrol Station
Description
An investigation is underway into how a patient suffered serious burns while on escorted leave from a mental health unit.

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT) confirmed a man from its Woodlands Unit, Ipswich, was involved in a "serious incident" at the Applegreen Petrol Station on Woodbridge Road East on Tuesday.

The trust said two members of staff from the facility were with him on supervised escorted leave at the time of the incident.

A spokesperson said the trust could not comment on the man's current condition.

The petrol station is a short distance from Ipswich Hospital, where the unit - which provides acute mental health care - is based.

Dr Faisil Sethi, chief medical officer at NSFT, said: “I can confirm that a serious incident took place on Tuesday 13 May in Ipswich.

"This involved a patient who was on supervised escorted leave with two members of staff from the Woodlands facility, which provides acute mental health care as part of our services.

"Our thoughts are with the patient, and we are supporting their family at this very difficult time. We have begun a full review into the circumstances of this incident.”

The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed it was made aware of the incident after "calls concerned for the welfare of a man".

A spokesperson said: "We were made aware of an incident at Woodbridge Road East following calls concerned for the welfare of a man.

"However, we stood down our response after we received information from blue-light colleagues that the man had left the scene and self-presented to hospital."

Suffolk Police has been approached for comment.
