Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer, known as the “Milwaukee Cannibal,” was an American serial killer responsible for the deaths of 17 young men between 1978 and 1991. His crimes included sexual assault, necrophilia, dismemberment, and, in some cases, cannibalism.

Born in 1960 in Milwaukee, Dahmer had a troubled childhood marked by shyness, introversion, and a fascination with dead animals. As he grew older, alcoholism, social isolation, and disturbing fantasies took hold. His first murder occurred at age 18, and over the years his crimes escalated in cruelty and complexity.

Dahmer lured his victims—often young, Black, or Asian men—by offering money or companionship, drugged them, and then carried out his assaults and killings. He photographed his crimes, kept body parts as trophies, attempted bizarre experiments to create “zombies,” and even engaged in acts of cannibalism.

In July 1991, he was finally arrested after one intended victim, Tracy Edwards, managed to escape and lead police to Dahmer’s apartment. Inside, officers discovered a horrific scene: photographs, dismembered bodies, skulls, organs preserved in jars, and human remains stored in barrels and refrigerators.

Tried in 1992, Dahmer was found legally sane and sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms—totaling 957 years in prison. On November 28, 1994, he was beaten to death by fellow inmate Christopher Scarver.

Even after his death, controversy continued around the study of his brain, raising questions about the psychological, neurological, and social factors that shaped one of history’s most infamous serial killers.
