Genetics

Today, there are three major Jewish sub-races:

Ashkenazim, Jews who live in European countries and Isreal.
Mizrahim, who live in various regions of the Middle East.
Sephardim, who mostly live in North Africa (Jews who were expelled from the Iberian Peninsula).

Each sub-race has a unique genetic makeup, as they interbred with the various natives of the regions they inhabit. We’re only concerned with Ashkenazim because there is no debate whether Mizrahim and Sephardim are European/White or not (they aren’t).

Recent genetic studies have found that Ashkenazim are a mix of Bronze Age Levantines and Southern Europeans, with some minor Northern European admixture. A 2017 study estimated that modern Ashkenazim were around 50% Middle Eastern, 34% Southern European, and 16% Northern European, varying between East and West. Similarly, a 2020 study found that modern Ashkenazim were over 50% Bronze Age Levantine and 41% European.

Ashkenazim are NOT Khazars. They have no Turkic or Central Asian ancestry.

In principal component analysis studies, Ashkenazim form a unique genetic cluster between the Middle Eastern and European races, with some minor overlap between the two. For reference, Mizrahim and Sephardim cluster with their fellow Middle East and North African peoples.

For a Jewish genetics researcher, being told in print that “Hitler would certainly have been very pleased” by your work can’t be pleasant. But that’s what happened in 2010 to Harry Ostrer, a geneticist at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, when he and his colleagues published a study showing that Jews in three different geographical areas had certain collections of genes that made them more biologically similar to one another than they were to non-Jews in the same regions. The work also showed that Jews around the world could trace their ancestry to a group of people who lived in the Middle East 2,000 years ago; that meant, however, that certain genetic signatures could be used to identify Jews, indicating that Jews share a common biological identity beyond their religious affiliation—which is what inspired the Hitler crack.

Jews, the work of Ostrer’s group and another team found, are as closely related genetically as would be expected for typical fourth or fifth cousins. “I would hope that these observations would put the idea that Jewishness is just a cultural construct to rest,” Ostrer told Science magazine at the time.

Ostrer’s new book, Legacy: A Genetic History of the Jewish People, goes further, making a convincing case that there is, in fact, a biological basis for Jewishness: “[Jews] can be said to be a people with a shared genetic legacy,” he writes, “although not all Jews share the same genes, nor is having part of that legacy a requirement for being Jewish.” Although Ostrer gathers the evidence succinctly, the book is unlikely to sway his most ardent critics, scientists such as Tel Aviv University’s Shlomo Sand, the historian who invoked Hitler’s memory to describe Ostrer’s research. But that may not be Ostrer’s main goal. For non-scientists who are curious about their genetic heritage, the book will open up rich avenues of exploration, along with a history lesson about the development of modern genetics—as well as provocative discussion about how the choices Jews are making today about their mates and their children will affect the future of Jewish genetics: Even as Ostrer argues for Jews’ common biological history, he sees the future of Jewish genetics going in a very different direction.

Over the past century, the sometimes-arcane debate within the scientific community over whether Jewishness is biological or cultural has been almost Talmudic, with various groups interpreting the data in different ways. Jews have higher IQs than others, some research has found, suggesting a genetic link among Jews; or maybe, other research has countered, that’s only because Jews have learned to take IQ tests better. Jews have a higher incidence of mental illness, or maybe only certain kinds of mental illness, depending on the study. In many cases, when researchers thought they had found some real biological trait more common among Jews, they realized later that they had “keys under the streetlight syndrome”—“ascertainment bias,” in scientist speak: If you’re only looking under the streetlight for your keys, that seems to be the only place you ever find them. In other words, when scientists start their research by looking for more evidence to confirm something they already think is true, they can be less likely to take other explanations into account, making their conclusions misleading.

The ability to sequence genomes quickly and more and more cheaply has accelerated the field in recent years, leading to new theories. Sand, for example, argues that today’s Jews are all descended from Khazars, an idea Ostrer finds unsupported by the evidence, as he explains in the book. And for some researchers, the question of “who is a genetic Jew” is less important than “who has Jewish genetic diseases,” since a major part of what Jews think about in terms of their genes involves Canavan, Gaucher, and Tay-Sachs diseases, and risk factors (...)

According to a new study, all Ashkenazi Jews are basically cousins. More specifically, Ashkenazi Jews are at least 30th cousins. LiveScience reports on the international team’s new study, which found that “the central and eastern European Jewish population, known as Ashkenazi Jews, from whom most American Jews are descended, started from a founding population of about 350 people between 600 and 800 years ago.”

According to Columbia University researcher Itsik Pe’er, who was involved with the study, their research also showed that the group of 350 was made up of Jews of Middle Eastern and European—thereby disproving the much-debated theory that Jews descended from Khazars, a Turkic people who lived in the Caucasus region between the 7th and 10th centuries.

Here’s how the study was performed, according to LiveScience:

[The team analyzed the genomes of 128 Ashkenazi Jews, comparing them with a reference group of 26 Flemish people from Belgium. From that the researchers were able to work out which genetic markers in the genome are unique to Ashkenazi. The number of similarities within the genomes allowed the scientists to compute a rough estimate of the founding population and put upper and lower limits on the amount of time that had passed since that group originated. In this case it is 30 to 32 generations, or at most 800 years. “[Among Ashkenazi Jews] everyone is a 30th cousin,” Pe’er said. “They have a stretch of the genome that is identical.”]

The discovery holds perhaps the most significance for doctors and Jewish patients. Just last week a new study revealed that all Ashkenazic women, even those without any family history of cancer, may carry the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic mutations linked to breast and ovarian cancer. The more genetic information available regarding Ashkenazi Jews, the fewer genome sequences doctors need to test and analyze when looking for potential problems or mutations.

The klepto-nepotistic regime of Volodymyr Zelensky is circling the toilet bowl as yet another corruption scandal soils his good name and tarnishes Ukraine’s reputation for fighting on behalf of all Europeans for democratic values. The aptly named Operation Midas has brought to light an immense extortion racket worth 100 million dollars. Published photos show the golden bathrooms of Zelensky’s associates and duffel bags of greenbacks fresh from the Federal Reserve. After years of de facto carte-blanche spending, Ukraine has merely demonstrated that its sole connection to Atlantic civilization is as a Bermuda Triangle for cargo loads of wealth and weaponry.

In my April piece, I made the case that Ukraine’s chief villains and criminal war profiteers were typically neither Slavic nor Christian. The latest cadre of unsavory actors is a vindicating addendum to that theory. In the latest scandal, long-time Zelensky associate Timur Mindich and his chief financial officer Oleksandr Zuckerman hatched a truly diabolical plan to take advantage of a special wartime law that prevents the enforcement of debts on the state nuclear operator Energoatom. With no legal recourse to sue for unpaid services, contractors were given an ultimatum to pay 10–15% of the contract value to Mindich. Contractors were even threatened with their companies being blocked indefinitely, destroyed, or having staff mobilized to the frontline. Audio recordings reveal Mindich and colleagues jokingly referring to the enterprise as the “shlagbaum“ [boomgate] that lifts once the toll is paid.

According to Ukrainska Pravda, both men are now in Israel, having been tipped off that the anti-corruption agencies were about to swoop. Slipping out undetected during wartime is no small feat; alas the story makes much more sense if we recall that in July Zelensky himself attempted to neuter the independence of the EU-backed anti-corruption bureaus, but backed down due to public outrage.

Mindich and Zelensky go all the way back to their days at Kvartal 95 — the media company that transformed Zelensky from a comedian into a TV star. It was Mindich who introduced him to Ihor Kolomoisky. Mindich then went from Kolomoisky’s fixer to Zelensky’s consigliere until very recently (when anti-corruption bodies started investigating). It’s therefore obvious who gave Mindich and Zuckerman advanced warning and packed the golden parachutes to Israel to go along with their golden bidets. From one gangsta’s paradise to another.

Interestingly, Mindich’s given name Timur is still popular in the East, even though it is in honor of 14th-century Turco-Mongol warlord Tamerlane — who ethnically cleansed the indigenous Indo-Europeans of Central Asia and constructed pyramids of up to 90,000 skulls. Mindich might eventually be able to see the real pyramids of Giza if Trump gets his high-rise approved in Gaza.

Another big fish in hot water is the erstwhile deputy PM, Oleksiy Chernyshov, whose meteoric rise was thanks to Mindich’s recommendation. Besides being involved in the energy embezzlement scheme, Chernyshov is being investigated by the FBI for money laundering. Remarkably, when Chernyshov was publicly flagged for investigation earlier this year, Zelensky felt pressured to demote him from the deputy PM role, but because their wives are the best of friends he plucked a new ministerial portfolio out of thin air: minister of national unity. Ukrainians have a very idiomatic expression for men who look like Chernyshov: “With a nose like that, you can see everything ahead of time.” Alas, he doesn’t seem to have foreseen his current plight, and only his family has fled abroad while he maintains his innocence.
