Fortaleza, Ceará – Eight years after one of the most brutal crimes in Brazil's history, the case known as Mangue 937 continues to haunt the national imagination, exposing the extreme cruelty of organized crime.
In the mangrove swamp of the Vila Velha neighborhood in Fortaleza, three women were lured into a deadly ambush under the pretext of a faction meeting. What happened next was a sequence of horrors that defies human comprehension: prolonged torture, beheadings with a blind machete, and point-blank shots, all recorded in a video that went viral on social media. Named "Mangue 937" – in allusion to the code of one of the victims –, the crime shocked Brazil due to its coldness and inspiration in executions by the terrorist group Islamic State.
The victims, Nara Aline Mota de Lima, 22, Darcyelle Ancelmo de Alencar, 26, and Ingrid Teixeira Ferreira, 25, were tried as traitors by a faction from Ceará, a rival of another criminal organization of Rio de Janeiro origin to which they were allegedly linked. What was supposed to be a simple punishment turned into a horror show, designed to intimidate rivals and reinforce the faction's power in Fortaleza's underworld.
