Albert Pike (1809–1891), a prominent Confederate officer, lawyer, and Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, held strong white nationalist views and actively opposed the integration of Black people into white society, particularly after the Civil War. His stated views included:
• Opposition to Integration in Masonry: In a 1875 letter, Pike expressed his refusal to associate with negroes in Masonic lodges, stating: "I took my obligations to white men, not to Negroes. When I have to accept Negroes as brothers or leave Masonry, I shall leave it… I am interested to keep the Ancient and Accepted Rite uncontaminated, in our country at least, by the leprosy of Negro association".
• Opposition to Black Suffrage/Rights: As an editor for the Memphis Daily Appeal in 1868, Pike wrote against allowing negro men to vote or serve in legal capacities, stating, "With negroes for witnesses and jurors, the administration of justice becomes a blasphemous mockery".
• Expulsion of Free Negroes: In 1858, Pike was part of a committee in Little Rock, Arkansas, that signed a circular encouraging the expulsion of free negroes from the state, arguing that their presence was an "evil" that threatened the stability of slavery.
• Advocacy for White Nationalism: Pike believed that only the white race was "fit to govern".
• Pro-Slavery Stance: He actively worked to preserve slavery and, as a Confederate commissioner, dealt with Native American tribes that held slaves.
