TELUK INTAN - Three Pakistani men died and three others were seriously injured after being hit by a car in an accident at Kilometer 16 of Jalan Teluk Intan-Bidor near Chui Chak here on Wednesday.
The incident happened at around 8 am when all the victims aged between 20 and 35 years old were walking to the mosque to perform Aidilfitri circumcision prayers.
Hilir Perak District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Adnan Basri said, two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene and the other died while receiving treatment at Teluk Intan Hospital.
"The inspection found that all the victims have valid permits and travel documents," he said in a statement here on Wednesday.
He said, preliminary investigations found that the accident occurred when a Proton Saga car driven by a man lost control and crashed before hitting the victim who was passing through the shoulder of the road.
He said a urine test on the 36-year-old driver who worked as a restaurant assistant confirmed that the man involved tested positive for cannabis.
"The man has been detained for further investigation.
"The case is being investigated under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which is driving while under the influence of drugs and causing death," he said.
